Iteration of the One-Sentence Pitch

It seems the simplest thing is the hardest is true, and to create the “perfect” one liner pitch. I am thinking about how to simplify it while adding more information into it at the same time, for quite a while now. Inspired by “Startups: Give Us Your Best One-Sentence Pitch”, I’m going to give it some time to try it out.

The basic format is:
My Company, (Company Name) is developing (a defined offering) to help (a target audience) (solve a problem) (with secret sauce).

At the end, the final polished example is: My Company, Socialista, is developing an ecommerce site to help new parents, who are female, shop for hip baby products at wholesale prices with automated ordering of diapers and other staples. (Lesson learned: drill down with more specific and detail).

1st Draft:
My Company, Malaysia Most Wanted, is developing a restaurant review site to help food lover discover good restaurants based on recommendations from food reviewers.

When people ask me what is Malaysia Most Wanted, I would say, “It’s an online food guide, like Yelp”. Sadly, very little people from this part of the world heard of Yelp. Then I would add, “It’s like TripAdvisor, but for Food.” Most people head of TripAdvisor, and I guess most would relate that it’s a website to help you look for food and restaurants, perhaps some would understand the community reviews part. But today the one-sentence pitch is not targeted towards the average Joe.

Target Audience
“A restaurant review” sites seems pretty accurately define the offering, but the target audience section could still use some work. Food Lover? Hmm, most people would qualify as food lover and on the lookout for places for lunch and dinner, one time or another. My initial shot is EVERYONE, which sounds even worse. Who wouldn’t use a restaurant review site? Probably my mom and dad, as they are not avid Internet users, and they get their feeds from newspaper and TV. So, the Internet Savvy? I guess 90% of the startup are doing something related to Internet, thus no one bothered to phrase “Internet Savvy” (there is a possibility for Mobile-enabled). Based on the demographic provided by Alexa, my users seem to be female, childless, age 25-45 with postgraduate educations, and browse from work (I could agree with that). Does that mean my target audience is young working adult? It still sounds funny. And not to forget about country specific: Malaysia.

Solve a Problem
So what kind of problem am I solving? The basic idea is to make it extremely easy to find suitable restaurants for daily lunch or dinner, and some place special for anniversary, birthday, etc. If I already know the place, I wouldn’t need this application, so “discover” sounds suitable. Discover what? Discover new restaurants? Discover suitable restaurants for specific occasions? Discover suitable restaurants for daily gastronomic satisfaction or special occasions? I am not sure that it’s getting better or worse.

Secret Sauce
What is the Secret Sauce? On the basic level, we would need large quantity of data, so that there is a good pool to choose from. Then we need quality reviews, so that we could separate the good from the lousy ones. Then we need either more features or user experience enhancement, to make it really easy to use and relevant (something which really work, and users would return to use it again). Yelp probably nail the data quantity part (in US, at least), and high number of reviews (quality is debatable), and user experience should be ranked “standard” (nothing to wow about, but it is usable and works well). So, how could we be better than Yelp, or being different? I really hate this question at times, where in my mind I would be tempted to say “we are simply better, look at our numbers (for Malaysia market); we must be doing something right, right?” But in reality, I know that wouldn’t work: No one shall believe Malaysia Most Wanted is better than Yelp, and better in what? Data? Traction? Reviews? User Experience? Relevant Results? Branding?
Malaysia Most Wanted beat other competitors in Malaysia market in terms of data quantity and user traction, but the market leadership is not really “tested” because no big players invaded the market yet: Yelp had yet to come, HungryGoWhere is still very much a Singapore thing, and Google Places is still a potential threat (not immediate). So our secret sauce is that we are the best in Malaysia? Sounds good, but not quiet suitable. Google+ succeeds because of Circle and Hangout, or because Google have the talent, money and user base to leverage on?

Personally, I know Malaysia Most Wanted is good (data and traction), but not great (a lot more to be accomplished). An army of startups storm into the market (idea), a handful come out alive (data and traction), and very few became victorious. What is the secret sauce to become victorious? After data and users, I believe the next step would be quality and user experience (and profitable is the story for another day). Quality Recommendations from Food Expert, like the Michelin and Zagat guide? If so, how are we better than these guides? Power of pooling a larger community with better transparency? Talking about Power, Google just acquired Zagat and integration with Google Places is just a matter of time. But if Google is doing it, there must be good value in quality and branded recommendations. Let focus on what Zagat (or Michelin) is all about? Based on the about page, I picked up the following keywords: Gastronomic Bible, Influential, Trusted, “Frequent, Knowledgeable and Experienced Surveyors”, Up-to-date, and Reliable. On the downside, these guides could be “closed” (book only, or pay to subscribe) and not widely accessible through the Internet, and sometimes less coverage on commoner’s food (e.g. Michelin's Red Guide).

Conclusion of Secret Sauce: Trusted Recommendations by Experience Food Reviewers validated by consumers. Though it might sound confusing, but it means not only the reviewers rate the restaurant, but the consumers will rate the reviewers rating as well (whether they agree or disagree with this reviews).

Final Draft
My Company, Malaysia Most Wanted, is developing a restaurant review site, to help young Malaysian discover suitable restaurants for daily gastronomic satisfaction and special occasions, based on reliable recommendations by trustworthy reviewers validated by consumers.

This is what Malaysia Most Wanted aim to be. Like our pitch at TechCrunch if you like it (though TechCrunch selected some of the best once-sentence pitch).

Restaurant Owner Guide: Cheap, Attractive, or Great (平靚正)

Among all the restaurants out there selling almost the same thing, how could one really standout and become the favourite among the food lovers? How do I start a great restaurant?

I have a hypothesis based a Cantonese expression: 平靚正which literally means Cheap, Attractive, and Great. To be one of the restaurants with good business, the restaurant should be exceptional at one of the following:

Cheap (平): You are offering the customer a bang for their bucks (cheaper than equivalent product in the market), where they know this is value for money (or even a real steal) without sacrificing on the quality or portion (if you do that, the customer will felt cheated). For example, the famous Tak Fok is offering crab for RM 18 per KG all year round, and the crab taste as good or even better than others; New Paris is known for delicious and affordable dishes, and their service is super-fast as well. Alternatively, you could experiment with Cheap by offering discounts during off-peak hours.
Attractive (靚): Attractive here refer to the place rather than the food, where the environment or ambience of the restaurant must be special (different from conventional restaurants), where it feels very new-age, artistic, romantic, homey, grand or based on a special theme such as nature or anime. For example, Fullhouse focus on modern lifestyle; while café café are known to be classy or romantic. If your kopitiam looks like a OldTown clone, you don’t have the brand nor is your food cheaper; why not turn your kopitiam into something special, perhaps something which cater for a specific group of customer.
Great (正): The food must be great. If being Attractive (靚) is like an Idol (like most boy or girl band who looks really good), the Great (正) is those who really can sing really well like Jacky Cheung or Celine Dion. The food must be so delicious that when people mentioned the specific dish, they could think of your restaurant immediately; perhaps not everyone can claim to the best Fried Kuey Teow in town, but your food must be known as delicious or high quality (a notch above your competitor, definitely not mediocre). Must be Good (better if Great), cannot be “so so” or “okay la”. For example, Pasta Zanmai and Dave’s are known to serve good food; and Nadeje Patisserie are known the serve the best Mille Crepe is Melaka, and probably the whole Malaysia as well.

A restaurant should be really good at ONE of it: Cheap (平), Attractive (靚) or Great (正). Though there are other elements such as good service, fast serving, cleanliness, locations, and others; but the 3 main elements of Cheap, Attractive, and Great (平靚正) should serve as the main guide. If you can nail one of it, there is no harm in polishing other elements to make it better.

Good luck to all the restaurant owners (and would be restaurant owners) out there, as we could like to enjoy more Cheap (平), Attractive (靚) or Great (正) :) so keep them coming.

After 5 years since the last release, months of hard work, we are determined to bring a new dawn of great food hunting experience to all the tham jiak Malaysian foodies. With Malaysia Most Wanted Food & Restaurants 2.0, promise better user experience: easier to search and discover our favorite food and restaurants for all kind of occasions.

What's New?

A complete revamp of the homepage, where there is a big search bar to start hunting (advance search for zooming on certain location or cuisines, or Google our site). You can discover restaurants by browsing by Locations, Cuisines and view our Best list.
We change the voting system from 5-star system to Facebook's like-system: no longer need to pull your hair to figure out is this place 3 stars or 4 stars, just thumbs up or thumbs down.
There is a new ranking system in place to show Top 10/50/100/500 in Malaysia, and for each state is well. Top 10 places in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka or Ipoh, anyone?
Mini Map: to show you what's nearby this restaurants; and show a list of "People who like this place also like ..."

As of today, we have 8311 restaurants listed with 333,516 visits per month; that's a lot of choices satisfying the desire of a lot of hungry folks.

Make The Pitch Ep 2: Photo Kiddos, Malaysia Most Wanted and Worthy Book

Desmond (me) from Malaysia Most Wanted Food venturing into Malaysia Travel; to easily find hidden gems of good travel places within Malaysia.

Jia from Worthy Book, bringing discount coupons to mobile devices; and probably a very good salesperson who persevere well.

Guess who won?

After viewing the full video, I do have to admit my pitching skill sucks. I could argue that some judges misunderstood my idea, or the judgement of market saturation is unfounded, or it's like selling a bat to a golfer (view my post-mortem). But still, I fail to deliver a solid pitch, and I sure didn't look convincing nor confident; but that doesn't mean the product sucks, or we are not moving in the wrong direction. I believe we are in the right market, doing things we are passionate about, solving a good problem; we have a solid team, a decent product and good traction (IMHO, haha), though we could always do better.

I guess I am more a executioner that a seller; then again, if I wanted to ask someone to give me some money, I better come up with a more convincing pitch. A lesson well learned.

Until the next time, we shall continue to do what we do best: to build better product for you, be it food, travel, property prices or price checker.

MalaysiaMW Food Tagline/Slogan Contest for T-shirt

After launching Malaysia Most Wanted FOOD almost 5 years ago (December 2006, time flies), we decide to print some really cool and comfy T-shirts as a thank you gesture for all the food bloggers who had made MalaysiaMW Food what it is today. Without you, there shall not be a MalaysiaMW Food.

What does a really cool T-shirt need? It needs a really cool and catchy tagline/slogan/phrase. Rather than making that up by ourselves, we thought it would be in the spirit of MalaysiaMW that we let the foodies decide what they would like to show-off on their T-shirt.

The rules are pretty simple:

Suggest a cool and catchy tagline/slogan/phrase (no graphic skill required, just a creative slogan) related to Malaysia, Foodie, Food, Restaurant, Guide, Blogger, Malaysia Most Wanted, Yum Yum, Awesomeness, etc. Make it fun, make it awesome, break the rules (e.g. My avatar can beat up your avatar)!

Post your comment on our Facebook wall. There is no requirement on word use.
Optional: You can suggest how the design should look like to match your tagline, or even submit a design if you wish.

The Slogan Winner (chosen by MalaysiaMW, decision is final) with the most awesome catchy tagline/slogan/phrase will walk away with RM 100 in cash.
The tagline/slogan/phrase with the most Facebook likes (Facebook Winner) will get RM 50 in cash.
Winners will be given a T-Shirt as well.
Requirement: You must reside in Malaysia OR have a bank account in Malaysia.

The contest starts on 18 October 2011 (Tuesday), 1PM and ends on 19 Nov 2011, 7PM (my novice Feng Shui date picking skill says these are the ONG dates). The winners will be announced within 7 days after the closing date (we shall contact you on Facebook); and we will transfer the cash prize (YES, you need a bank account) within 7 days. You will get the T-shirt once we printed it, which might take a while.

The Slogan Winner will get RM 100. If he/she happens to be the Facebook Winner as well, then the total prize money is RM 100 + RM 50 = RM 150. Slogan Winner and Facebook Likes Winner could be 2 separate people. If it sounds confusing, just join anyway; you will get something if you win :).

Make the Pitch: Malaysia Most Wanted booted (ouch!)

Very recently, we decided it’s the right time to get some funding on a reality TV show (Malaysia’s version of Dragon’s Den). Why? I would like to test if the ideas of Malaysia Most Wanted would hold, and whether I can present a convincing case. Since I get a face-to-face time with some potential investors, I hope to get some valuable feedbacks. Hopefully we would get some exposure for our brand (and get more people to be aware of it, and use it), secure some funding to accelerate our growth, and perhaps get some help in the Sales & Marketing department. Our pitch focus on expanding MMW into Travel, and monetization of MMW Food.

The 1st round went quite smoothly, as one of the judges was quite impressed with our achievement in the Food & Restaurants segment, though there are concerns that we would not make enough money (our revenue is not very promising at the moment, as no one is responsible for sale). They get to thinker with our website on the iPhone and Blackberry (because the video won't play on MacBook), and trying to find their favorite local restaurants (luckily one of the judges’ favorite, Bawang Merah is in the list). So we are safe!

On Round 2, we face Round 1’s judges’ bosses (the CEOs). We need to submit a business proposal (which we are notified 1 day before, OMG!), and realize on the spot that we can’t do a PowerPoint presentation (the assumption is the judges already seen our previous slides and business proposal). Anyway, PowerPoint presentation on TV show looks boring, so we need the more dramatic verbal exchange.

I decided to keep my introduction short, since I assume they read the proposal and seen the previous PowerPoint. Perhaps it’s a bad move, as I could sense at least one the judges seem confused of what we are doing (perhaps she thought I am creating a blog and writing my own reviews based on my personal taste). For those who don’t understand MMW, it is a collaboration platform where users could submit recommendations, ratings, pictures and comments on their favorite restaurants. So it’s community driven, and the community decides and votes for the best.

The worst is yet to come, as I realize later in the show that the main VC (the guy with influence and experience) already has prejudice about the segment we are going into: it’s saturated with low profit margin. So Travel is too competitive, and there is no money to be made (or not enough money). On the global scope, we might have TripAdvisor as the leader (and other names don’t event popup in our mind). In Malaysia, we have static government endorsed travel websites like Tourism Malaysia and Virtual Malaysia, and Cuti-cuti focus on promoting travel packages rather than promoting places of interest. Do we have a really good (at least TripAdvisor-grade) travel website in Malaysia, where we can like really cool places like The Dusun or Sungai Klah Hotspring (and many more we are unaware of)? We don’t, and that’s why I wanted to build one. I guess my argument didn’t shake the “saturated” thought off the judges. Besides, company like KAYAK (USD 835 Million evaluation), TripAdvisors (USD 82 Million Revenue per Quarter) and even China's lvmama 驴妈妈 are closing multi-millions dollar round of funding. Do we want to wait for Foreign companies to dominate entire of Malaysia's websphere?

Actually I was pretty confident after the pitching (before the judges give me their piece of mind), but I was so wrong. First of all, one of the judges still think I write reviews (I hope the rest get the idea), and they still believed the market is saturated and we are not unique (even though we have proven to be the best in the Malaysia Food & Restaurant segment), and they don’t believe we have the capabilities to make Malaysia Travel another success. My heart just sank, WTF! Before we build MMW Food, perhaps no one would believe us. Now we have built MMW Food with reasonable success, and you don’t believe we can do it with MMW Travel. How many times do I have to prove myselves? The Venture Capitalists are not very adventurous, aren't they? I thought of putting in another final word, but I didn’t. I don’t want to beg you if you don’t believe in our idea and capability. I take it we are not on the same boat, and it would probably be hard for us to work together if we don't share the same belief and vision.

I think the judges don’t believe that number 1 Food & Restaurants guide in Malaysia is a valuable asset (or they don’t think I can monetize it, which might be true, since I am still “unproven”). Then again, I got reminded that Cradle have an “unofficial policy” not to invest in something “normal a.k.a saturated”, they prefer some really niche, unique or with buzz (MMW is definitely not their cup of tea, but sadly no other judges back us as well). Another thought is that the judges don’t use online websites to look for food and travel (they can’t relate well because they are not the target users); they get their recommendation from friends, and ask travel agency to arrange their travel.

Perhaps my presentations lacks emotions, all seems to focus on facts and figures (perhaps nervous and not straight to the point, and probably didn't clear the confusion as well). Clearly I fail to convey my ideas strongly, and fail to convince that we create cool and useful stuffs. The guy from PhotoKiddos was worried after his pitch because he got shot on this business plan, and I told him human are emotional beings, and the big cute smiling child photos on the stage might do some magic. And I was right, haha. Anyway, I like his photos and could be his potential customer (though not necessary means I would like to invest in his business).

What have I learned? This is tricky, as I seems pretty defensive and still believes strongly in my own ideas. The main reasons I do MMW Food and Travel is because there are no decent products out there that meet my needs, and my sole purpose is to create something useful and people would enjoy using it (and it helps them). Perhaps there are not much monetary values in it to make millions, but it should not be difficult to feed one mouth (or a few). You probably can doubt my capability to make money, but I am offended when you doubt my capability to build a successful web platform. Then again, it gave me more motivation to prove that I am right: I will develop the most useful travel website in Malaysia within 2 years. Hopefully I am not an arrogant and ignorant bastard, as I have no way of knowing (unless more people told me so). Anyway, this is probably my 3rd failed VC funding attempt in relation with Cradle, perhaps I am destined to walk the no funding required path. MMW Food might not met 100% of my expectations yet; as there is a bunch for really cool features I would work on to make it more useful and cool. It would be cool to do use User & Content Profiling, to understand if the user prefers Western or Asian, Spicy or Mild, Halal or non-Halal, and match the relevant results with their preferences. As for the content, we like to know if the restaurant is romantic or child-friendly, good for supper or dinner, modern or classic, etc. At the same time, we would create community guides, where community expert recommends their favorite restaurants. If Jack prefer Western food particularly Italian, then those with the same taste as Jack would follow his guide (if the Jack’s guide have more followers, he might become a celebrity). We might have another person’s guide which focus on Indian and Spicy Food, etc. All sounds cool and fun to me, and I hope you will like it as well.

While strolling through Tesco to perform Grocery shopping, I always wonder if the Promotion is really a steal, or did the price went up or gone down for a specific item. For a newbie shopper like me, I don’t know anything about the prices, and I wanted to know if I could be a smart shopper like the "Aunties", by leveraging on technology.

Thus born the idea of Malaysia Price Checker, where we keep track of the prices of grocery, and everyone can contribute to build a better system. Now I can know what’s the expected market price for Mister Potato, or which place sold the cheapest SD Card.

Bear with us as we quietly launch the service about 2 months ago, having archived over 1000+ items; do feel free to use the platform, contribute prices if possible, and give feedbacks if you feel there are rooms for improvement (we have a whole list of work in progress).

One day, I shall be better than the aunties in price comparison :)

Retiring MMW Map

MMW Map was built at a time where Google Map doesn’t have a map of Malaysia (only Satellite Images), finding places or POIs around Malaysia is difficult and we wanted to become like Wikimapia.

As times goes by, it had been difficult for us to handle the large volume of increasing and rapid changing POIs. Sad to say that we have limited resources in hand, thus it is difficult for us to bring MMW Map to the next level (it had been orphaned without supervision for quite a while now). We have plan to morph MMW Map into MMW Places, where we focus on specific POIs like Post Office, ATMs, Petrol Station so that we can keep track of useful things around us rather than keeping track of everything (which Google Maps seems to do a reasonably good job nowadays). Sadly, other projects have taken precedence.

Until further notice: Goodbye MMW Map, you had served well.

PS: we shall keep MMW Map in passive mode for a few months before taking it offline.

Save our Children's Education

Most of us know that our education system is “broken” (Even the US Education system is failing: Waiting for Superman), yet we are not sure of the better alternatives. Should we send our kids to Montessori School? Is International School really better? How about school for special kids? Is there transparency in the teaching methods and programs? How about project-based learning? Can we change the education paradigm (which doesn’t fit the needs and style of today’s children) according to Sir Ken Robinson’s analysis? All of us wanted a change, but we don’t know where to start.

I stumbled upon an article talking about DonorChoose, where teachers post small projects which they like to do with their students, and the public can choose to donate in any amount (minimum is USD 1) in their favorite projects and causes. There might be a class to form a music band, or teaching English to rural children. We can donate to projects in our hometown, or any topics which interest us or matter to us.

I think education is important, but it’s not functioning as I expect it to be. I wanted more open learning, where students are encourage taking on special projects and taking up more hobbies. I wanted them to start a rock band, kick start a small business, build a game, help the community, create arts, active in sports, etc.

Though I don’t have the education background (I did teach computer class to children for 4 years, where I felt my contribution and impact is extremely limited), but I believe there are people out there with more passion and capability than I am as a teacher.

I (or rather Malaysia Most Wanted) would like to contribute in terms of technological skills to develop something like DonorChoose, where we can get people passionate about education and start doing something about it. I can’t do this alone, as a great piece of software without passionate people driving it would be utterly useless.

Valentine Restaurant Search

Every year we will have a surge of searching for food on Valentine day itself (Malaysians are certainly very last minute people, aren't we?). Anyway way, there are quite a number of people who start looking a week ahead, as you can see clearly in the graph.

So, what places are they searching for? (it's good reference for birthday, anniversary, or the next Valentine). The top 5 places goes to:

Malaysia still like their Japanese buffet, as this had been the trend for the last 5 years. Tamarind Springs is coming up strong as a decent competitor. Look Out Point offer nice night view, but the quality of food is questionable. As of The Cave, I'm afraid it is no longer there (or under renovation?).

Other noticeable "romantic" venue includes

Nadeje Patisserie Cafe is definitely the clear winner in Melaka, as they serve absolutely delicious Milk Crepe (western layer cakes) made by a Japanese lady. It's a surprise to me that quite a number of "traditional" Chinese restaurants pop up, but I guess there are still a big market for this group of food lovers. Besides that, we have bar in the sky, lifestyle cafe, Balinese food, Japanese, Italian, and what not.

In order to get a better understanding of the most popular food & restaurants websites in Malaysia, we have to feed a list of well known foodie websites (research by googling) into Google AdPlanner; which could give us an independent 3rd party results on their actual visitors and pageview (it's not 100% accurate, but it does give a good estimation).

Earlier version of Google AdPlanner does not support sub domains (domains which does not starts with www), thus the result is more general and many bloggers have to be left out. The latest version is slightly more accommodating and accurate, though it does show MMW Food & Restaurants having less visitors than it actually does (based on data from Google Analytics). But then again, if this shortfall happens to us, it probably happens to others as well; so I assume the comparison within Google AdPlanner should work well.

We did a review of The State of Malaysia Food Websites on May 09 (we utilise our primaty domain malaysiamostwanted.com, which include web traffics for food, property, event and map as well), thus we are doing another round of comparison focusing on http://food.malaysiamostwanted.com/ only.

Broswer Compatibility: IE8, Firefox 3.5 and Chrome 4

Our previous browser compatibility strategy support Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox 3 is a bit outdated, and it’s time to relook into the current browsers’ trend in order to introduce a more intuitive user interaction by leveraging on the power of more advance browser.

Based on Google Analytics’ report on visitor’s Browser, Malaysia Most Wanted will gradually support the Top 3 most popular browser: Internet Explorer (51%), Firefox (34%) and Chrome (8%). Though Apple’s Safari share of 4% is quite significant as well, but we do not have the necessary resources to do so at the moment (and we are hoping support for Chrome will do some good for Safari, since they utilize the same browsing Engine, WebKit).

Among different versions of Internet Explorer, IE7 (37%) is the most popular followed by IE8 (34%) and IE6 (28%). We shall focus on supporting IE8, since the adaptation rate of IE8 will pick up very soon and IE6 is too old (and too buggy).

As for Firefox, we shall focus on Firefox 3.5 (62%). The market share of Firefox 3 (25%) will continue to fall.

Chrome 4 (6%) market share is still very little is due to the recent release which was only 1 day ago. We are sure that Chrome’s automatic update will upgrade the current Chrome 3 (88%) very soon, thus we will emphasize on supporting Chrome 4.

It’s almost impossible to support all browsers (sorry to Opera) and all versions (goodbye to IE6), but we will continue to make sure future enhancement will support Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3.5 and Chrome 4.

The original idea behind Malaysia Most Wanted is property analysis, where we shall provide the price trend so that you know which area is performing better. We start with listing of new properties followed by food to create awareness of the existence MMW, so that when we finally have the price trend, you can actually find it.

We try to secure some funding through this and this, but they claim the idea is either useless or can’t make any money. I do agree making money might be difficult (and I am giving away this information for free), but the idea of property price trend is far from useless. At the end, we have no choice but to self fund.

Today we finally took the first step to analyse the property price trend for Puchong area, where you could see the price and rental movement for the past 6 months. We categorise them nicely into location and property type (apartment, terrace, bungalow, etc) so that the estimation is slightly more accurate (though not perfect yet).

The prices shown here are asking price, meaning the price owner or agent ask for when they put up an advertisement for sale/rent (so it is not the actual transaction price, as such information is pricy and not open to public).

This is just the first baby step where we have more features in the pipeline. Not good enough? Don’t worry; we will come up with more data (covering more areas), integration of map, comparison charts and many more!

For the Top 3 spots, we have the ever popular

Saisaki and Shogun had dominated the top 2 spot for quite a while, and Look Out Point is the new No.3.

Li Jin @ Pavilion KL is gaining popularity probably due to their promotion on newspaper, and The Cave @ SS2 is also becoming popular as the “couple place”.

Then we have the regulars like Yuen Buffet Steamboat Restaurant and Restoran Shabu Shabu. Jogoya is still holding at no.8 spot and the exclusive Hajime Japanese Restaurant at no. 10. Others include Bumbu Bali and Delicious Café.

The elusive William Mamaks is gaining momentum at no. 13, followed by other new comers such as KOKOPELLI Travellers Bistro @ PJ, Full House @ Ara Damansara, Nancy’s Kitchen @ Jonker Street and Carnaval Churrascaria @ Damansara Jaya.

After reading on TheEdge’s netv@lue 2.0 review (May 04, 2009) of FriedChillies.com which boast 1.5 millions hit per months, MMW Food feel the urge to check out the current state of Malaysia Food websites.

I start googling for “Malaysia Food” and “Malaysia Restaurant” and start feeding all the Malaysia food-related websites into Google Ad Planner (bloggers hosted on blogspot.com cannot be added due to some technical reasons) to check our their monthly web traffic (other tools include Alexa, Compete and Quantqast).

To my delight, malaysiamostwanted.com is at the number 1 spot with 100K Unique Visitors and 560K Page Views per month. To be fair, only 75% of the traffics belongs food.malaysiamostwanted.com. Food & Travel blogger vkeong.com is at second place with 30K monthly Unique Visitors followed by goeatout.com.my. malaysiabest.net, kyspeaks.com and rasamalaysia.com are in the top 5 as well.

Web Traffic Estimation from Google Ad Planner is not 100% accurate, but it can give a good estimated if used together with other tools such as Alexa. Again, all results are estimation on best effort basis by Independent party.

New year new outlook, but something just never change for quite a while. We have Japanese Buffet for the top 2 spots, and Cheras New Way Karaoke dominated the 3rd spot (I have to remove this from the list as it sort of undermine MMW Food’s authority, but funny) and Jogoya had gone to number 4.

We have the usual favourites like Look Out Point for affordable view and great night view, and the affordable Yuen Buffet Steamboat. The classy Japanese Restaurant Hajime is at No.7 followed by Tupai-Tupai (malay food). Chinese Restaurant Marco Polo is a popular choice during Chinese New Year, and the illusive Williams Mamak made Top 10 as well.

Others notable goodies include the affordable and fast New Paris Restaurant, the classy Sky Bar, Lala Chong seafood, the Cave for couple and Restaurant Shabu Shabu for cheap Japanese Steamboat on weekdays.

We run a test drive to test how affective (or how good) is Malaysia Most Wanted Food in helping us to find the best food in Penang for our Makan Trip and come out with the following recommendation (extracted from The Blue Dragon is Looking @ Me: Penang Makan):

Teo Chew Cendol @ Penang Road, this is the most famous cendol road side stall in Penang, and you get delicious Cendol for just RM 1.60, definitely a very good deal.
Joo Hooi Cafe @ Penang Road, is just beside Teo Chew Cendol which serve good Laksa. The Friend Keow Teow looks good, but I didn't try it. You are not allowed to bring in the Teo Chew Cendol from outside, else they will charge you RM 0.50.
Ah Leng FKT @ Jalan Dato Keramat, within Kafe Khoon Hiang serves delicious Fried Keow Teow with 3 big prawns for RM 4.50.
Him Hiang Biscuit @ Burma Road, a good places to buy goodies of Biscuit (Tau Sah Piah and Heong Peng) for your friends and families.
Nasi Kandar Line Clear @ Penang Road, serves authentic Indian Nasi Kandar in the back Alley, and pretty good Roti Pisang too.
Pasar Air Itam, famous for its good food and very near Kek Lok Si, but Laksa in Joo Hooi might be better.
Paya Terubong Seafood, the place is crowded and they ran out of crab and sotong when we arrive at 9pm. The seafood is not bad.

Other Recommendations: Anba Coconut, Batu Lancang Foodcourt, Curry Mee Sisters, Edelweiss Swiss Cafe, Kheng Pin Cafe, Teluk Kumbar Seafood and Transfer Road Roti Canai.

The top 3 spot for this month is still dominated by Japanese Food and Buffet, but Jogoya had managed to regained the number 1 spot (hopefully it is for the better and not just hype).

For the top 10, we have Look Out Point aka KL Night View, Hajime the High Class Japanese Food, Neway Karaoke in Cheras (for some odd reason), Yuen Buffet the Affordable yet Delicious Steamboat, Sky Bar the Classy Bar, the Shabby William Mamak and Lemon Garden Café the Shangri-La Buffet.

We have the usual old timer like Bavarian Bierhaus (German), Bumbu Bali (Balinese), Shabu Shabu (Japanese), Marco Polo (Chinese), Tupai-Tupai (Malay) and SS2 Murni (Mamak). A good variety of cuisine huh!

Other notable mention is The Cave @ SS2 - kind of like a concept restaurant for couples, Rakuzen at Chulan Square and Boat House at TTDI. Ninja Jones at Mid Valley is back to the list, with the ever fast and affordable New Paris Restaurant @ SS2.

Malaysia Most Wanted MAP is ALIVE!

After months of preparation and testing, Malaysia Most Wanted (MMW) is proud to launch Map of Malaysia, to help you reach the destination and understand the surrounding neighborhood.

How does it work?
We have an online map (using Google Map Technology) which shows proper street maps and satellite images of the area. We added in Placemark (small little meaningful icons to indicate the nature of the place) which label the surrounding buildings and area, such as Banks, Parks, Offices, Shopping Malls and etc to help you easily identify and understand the area. You could search for any address or name of places / buildings / business to find your desired map with its surrounding places clearly marked.

Why do I need it?
To help you find your away around unfamiliar places by showing the correct map with proper landmarks. Especially when I want to find a particular shop or attend an interview in unfamiliar address, or finding good food around Ipoh or places to travel in Penang.

To help you understand the neighborhood and surrounding area better, such as what are the public amenities around, or are there any hidden lake or places that I never noticed before. I might be considering of moving to Bandar Baru Klang, and I am interested to know how developed is the place and what shops are available within walking distance.

Why is certain map empty without any Placemark?
We are currently working on marking as much of Malaysia as possible, so quite a number of places are not fully covered yet. You could do you part by helping us to mark area you are familiar with, by clicking on “Add Placemark” at the left hand corner of the Map.

We hope Malaysia Most Wanted Map will make Malaysia more accessible and make finding places as easy as 123.

On Sunday

This month, the top 3 spot went to Buffet (Malaysian sure is Tham Jiak), and Japanese food influenced buffet. I realise Shogun and Saisaki are probably sister company, and it is good value for money at the moment.

The “Night View of KL” spot: Look Out Point is still pretty popular, followed by the ever affordable Yuen Buffet Steamboat with its hot chicken wing. It’s a surprise that Hajime is at the 6th spot now, either it is really good or people are more loaded during the bad economy time, or both. The Best Satay of Malaysia from the Satay Town: Restoran Sate Kajang Hj. Samuri is still holding strong, followed by the shabby Williams Mamak and classy Sky Bar.

Others notable mentions include the all time favourite Shabu Shabu and Bumbu Bali in Puchong, Delicious Café in Bangsar, The Cave and Murni in SS2, Chef & Brew in Bukit Damansara, Boat House in TTDI and Ninja Jones in Mid Valley.

Belated Malaysian Food & Restaurant Review: September 2008

I travelled into the mountains and out of Internet + TV for 3 weeks, and I really crave for some good old Malaysian food after that. Now I think no other country can beat the diversity and deliciousness of Malaysian food (of course, I am a Malaysian).

Not much changes to the Top 3 spots (and it ain’t easy to knock down the most popular place in town).

Jogoya is still at the 4th place despite the negative reviews, so it proves that popular doesn’t mean good. We all like a good KL city night view together with out dinner, and Look Out Point could give you just that. Cheap and nice steamboat is available at Yuen Buffet Steamboat.

Big Plate Restaurant and Williams Mamak is doing very well this month in the Top 10 list. Some new comers includes Hartz Chicken Buffet, Chitralada Palace, Carnaval Churrascaria, The Cave, Little Penang Café, Al Diafah, Shilla Korean Buffet and Xenri.

Sometimes I just wonder where is the best Wantan Mee in town, and I will find out the answer for that soon.

One thing is for sure, buffet is the absolute favourite of all Malaysian where the top 3 favourite makan place of Auguest 2008 goes to:

I wonder why did Jogoya manage to make a comeback, did the food gotten better and the pricing is more reasonable now?

The classy Sky Bar is standing strong at 4th place, followed by good scenery from Look Out Point. Yuen Buffer is another food bargainers heaven, and of course the mysterious Tupai-Tupai.

New comer Williams Mamak is the Malaysian midnight favourite (as compared to SS2 Murni), and Bumbu Bali never loses its charm since the beginning.

Enough of the old boys, lets see if there is anything new. New faces includes Chef & Brew, Sri Ayutthaya, Nihon Kai and Momo.

Returning new comers include Hajime, Matsuba, Noble House Imbi, Boat House, Delicious Café, Bavarian Bierhaus, Lala Chong and Marco Polo.

Be sure to check out Malaysia International Fireworks Competition 2008 @ Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC), Precicnt 5, Putrajaya. The Star Newspaper reported that Merdeka Eve celebration would take place at Dataran Merdeka, KLCC and Bukit Bintang. I am sure all the clubs and pubs would put an extra effort to beef up the celebrations and increase the city's intoxication level over the long weekend.

Malaysia Most Wanted Property & Real Estates supports Advance Search using various criteria such as project name, price, property type, land tenure, developer and location.

How to search by Price?

Price had a very flexible syntax. For example

200K (or 200000), to search for property in the around the price of RM 200,000 (somewhere between RM 150-250K).
100-200K (or 100 to 200 K), the price range of RM 100,000 – 200,000.
>200K (or more than 200K), to search for any properties priced from RM 200,000 and above.
<200k (or less than 200K), for any properties priced below RM 200,000.

Simple Search Syntax

The Price criteria could be used as part of the simple search syntax, just type in “price: 200K”. You could add in additional keywords as well, such as “Puchong price:200K”.

Advance Search

This looks more complicated, but it is more powerful in helping you to narrow down on your search results. You could use any of the following criteria (remember to double quote the word for exact match):

Search For, where you can type in any keyword you would like to search for
Project Name, name of the property development project, like Koi Kinrara, Saujana Residency, etc
Price, allowing searching for property by price range using some simple but special syntax. For example, 100K, 100-200K, >100K, <200k>
Type, property type such as terrace link, condominium, bungalow, semi detached, shop, etc.
Land Tenure, such as Freehold, Leasehold or Malay Reserve Land.
Developer, name of the property developer such as Bukit Hitam, Sime UEP and etc. Beware that sometimes big developers like SP Setia or IOI used their sub companies as developers.
Location, type in any locations may it be state, area, street or taman.

Introducing Advance Search for Property (muck like for Food), to help you narrow down your search easily to find your dream property. The following are all the fields available to be searched for:

Search for, where you could use any keywords (which does not fall into any of the other fields)
Project Name, the name of the property project, such as Bandar Bukit Puchong, Space U8, etc
Price, to specify your price, such as around 100K, 300-500K, less than 500K, >500K and etc
Type, to specify the property type such as Condominium, Terrace Link and etc
Developer, to search for certain developer
Location, to search by state, area or location

You don’t have to fill in all the criteria or fields; you could start by 1 criteria and narrow the search result down by more criteria later.

Words Recommendation is available to help you select your criteria more effectively. The recommended list will get shorter all you type in more characters. Notice the double quote around each select word(s) from the list, which is more exact matching. For example, Bandar Bukit Puchong without the double quote will find result which match either Bandar OR Bukit OR Puchong (Bandar could return many irrelevant result, such as Bandar Bukit Tinggi). Putting a double quote around “Bandar Bukit Puchong” ensure exact match and better results in this case.

Shogun, Japanese Buffet @ One Utama, Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, Selangor is still holding strong on the no 1 spot. I guess it does have an advantage for being in a popular shopping complex become the talk of the town. Maybe I should give it a try someday and add to the statistic.

Saisaki Japanese Buffet @ Wisma UOA II, Jalan Pinang, Kuala Lumpur had gained the no 2 spot, another Japanese buffer which had been around for quite a while. Malaysia must have been crazy about buffet these days.

Neway Karaoke @ Cheras Plaza, Taman Segar, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur is still at the top 3, and I wonder why. Izzit because of Cheras folks, or izzit about karaoke, it can’t be about the food right?

As usually, we have the same old popular venues like Look Out Point, Jogoya, Sky Bar, Yuen Buffet, Tupai Tupai, Bumbu Bali, SS2 Murni, New Paris and etc.

Some of the noticeable newcomer include Carl’s Jr, which serve very expensive charbroil burger. Matsuba Japanese Restaurant in Desa Sri Hartamas is coming up, and Pantai Seafood Restaurant at Kaya Ara is no stranger as well. Rakuzen Japanese Restaurant at Chulan Square seems to be gaining popularity fast, and perhaps it’s worth to check out Big Plate Restaurant at Subang Permai.

Though there are not much changes in the top 10 spot, but the top 50 does introduces many new places worth checking out. Maybe it’s time to switch it to be top 100 instead, the more choices the better?

Shogun, Japanese Buffet @ One Utama, Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, Selangor had been hot for the past 3 months, seems like the latest buffet craze in town after Jogoya (at fifth Place). I saw a disallowed photography sign at the Sunway Pyramid branch, so might be a slight inconvenience for food bloggers.

Neway Karaoke @ Cheras Plaza, Taman Segar, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur is back at second place, and I am not sure the food or the karaoke is more popular there.

The 3rd place is Tupai Tupai Restaurant & Cafe @ Jalan Bukit Petaling, Kuala Lumpur making a comeback. This place must had serve pretty good Malay food, or people are curious about this restaurant every time passing by.

Recent darling Sky Bar still holding at 4th place, and the ever cheap and nice Yuen Buffet Steamboat is at 6th place. We have Saisaki at 8th place, and the romanctic Look Out Point at 11th place. Other notable mention include Bon Bon’s Café, New Paris Restaurant, SS2 Murni, Boat House Restaurant and Dae Sa Kwan Korean BBQ Restaurant.

Another fruitful and delicious month and we would continue to bring to lights more hidden treasures around Malaysia :)

MMW Property on TheEdge Malaysia

Malaysia Most Wanted had finally got its first limelight at TheEdge Malaysia.

I am glad that it did get some attention and people are finding it worthwhile, but there is still a lot of work to be done. I need to update site with the latest property offering, and not to mentioned the vital property analysis which is promised to be the core of the entire site.

Since I am labeled as “property community site”, I think it’s due time to migrate the more community friendly platform of MMW Food to MMW Property to really encourage and allow some community participation.

Personally, I feel that MMW Property is not up to par yet, and there is still a lot of work to be done. Let’s get the game rolling :)

March is the month where we see quite a few of the old favourite coming back to the top 10 list.

Shogun, Japanese Buffet @ One Utama, Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, Selangor still top the list this month, I guess Malaysia have a thing with Buffet and Japanese food in a shopping complex. It got a rating of 3.5 out of 5 from 6 votes.

Sky Bar @ Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Kuala Lumpur is still a happening place for this city, where people pay to feel good.

Lemon Garden Cafe, Hi Tea Buffet @ Shangri-La Hotel, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur is gaining popularity fast with its delicious looking food.

Yuen Buffet Steamboat Restaurant, Buffet Steamboat @ Mentari Plaza, Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya, Selangor is still holding strong at 4th place with its cheap and nice buffet steamboat, with Tupai Tupai Restaurant & Cafe @ Jalan Bukit Petaling, Kuala Lumpur making a comeback at 5th place.

The strange thing is we have Neway Karaoke @ Cheras Plaza, Taman Segar, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur at 7th place, probably Cheras people must have like to express their singing talent dearly. The ever delicious Restoran SS2 Murni, Mamak @ SS2, Petaling Jaya, Selangor is at 8th place, and Bumbu Bali @ Bandar Puteri Puchong, Puchong, Selangor is still holding at 10th place.

It’s another fruitful month, dominated mostly by old but still yummy players.

Where to go for Valentine Romantic Dining

It is the time of the year, where everyone would crowd together to have a romantic dinner with their loves one on the same night. It’s seems like a fate that no couples could escape, due to society pressures and irrelevant origins.

No matter what, we still need to find a good spot to dine. Someplace cozy, perhaps romantic, decent food and definitely not cheap (at least not too cheap). The spots which comes to my mine is always Bangsar, Hartamas and Pavilion perhaps? Let see what I could dig out from Malaysia Most Wanted Food and Malaysia Foodies.

Sky Bar or Luna Bar seems like a good place, classy and nice view, definitely expensive, uncertain about the food. I tried La Bodega before, nice environment with nice food. Look Out Point seems like a good option, with a nice night view. Maybe some Chocolate Fondue at Fondue House.

Perhaps some more classy place, such as Cameo, Vincenzo Ristorante Italiano, Opus, Rick's Cafe Casablanca or Saffron.

For good food, probably Bumbu Bali, or King Crab if you are really a crab lover (not romantic though), Ninja Jones, Max! Kitchen and Wines, My Elephant, Italiannies, Food Foundry, Isthmus KL, El Cerdo, Sandias, Daorae Garden.

Hmm, I am having a hard time to make up my mind :|

Advance (and Helpful) search for Malaysia Food

I always found the Search feature is very important, in order for us to find the exact food that we are looking for. Initially we started with Google-styled of simple search (with only one textbox, where you can type all your search criteria in here). Perhaps this could be quite troublesome for non-techie which needed more help and guidance, thus we created the Advance (and Helpful) search.

Simple Search

Basically, there are 3 fields

Search for, where you can type in any keyword you would like to search for
Cuisine, like Chinese, Vietnamese, Halal, Vegetarian, Seafood, etc
Location, for the state, area, street or building

You don’t have to fill in all 3 criteria, just one of them will do. You could key in more criteria when you want to narrow down / filter the results.

Advance (and Helpful) Search

As you would have noticed, there is a list of recommended words shown up as you start typing in the textbox of Cuisine and Location. It gives some recommendation of words so that you could easily know what kind of options is available. The recommendation list will get shorter as you type more, narrowing the list of available options. Just click on the recommended word and it shall be filled into the textbox automatically.

Notice that we put the double quote around the selected word, such as “Jalan Gasing”. This is to ensure the exact word “Jalan Gasing” is searched for. Without the double quote, it shall look for the word “Jalan” OR “Gasing”, and the word “Jalan” could caused a lot of irrelevant result to be returned. You could learn more about Simple Searching, or try the Location and Cuisine searching.

Malaysia Food Map: Minor Enhancement

We made two minor tweaking on our existing Malaysia Most Wanted Food - Google Map feature which enable:

i) By default show by Map only (used to be Hybrid – Map + Satellite images). Why? Because it loads faster and the map is clearer.

ii) Additional tab named “Google Map”, which allow to view this location on Google Maps Official Page. Why? So that you could use the Google Map Search to find other addresses, or merge with your other personal maps stored under My Maps tab (in Google Maps).

With this feature, it helps you to easily find the place, and also to spot other valuable food resources (click on the fork and spoon icon) in its surrounding areas.
